DESCRIPTION: FFWBOI The National Weather Service in Boise has issued a * Flash Flood Warning for... Northeastern Ada County in southwestern Idaho... Southwestern Boise County in southwestern Idaho... Northwestern Elmore County in southwestern Idaho... * Until 930 PM MDT. * At 633 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. An estimated 1.5 to 2 inches of rain have fallen since 530 PM MDT. Additional rainfall amounts of 1.0 to 1.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Ponding of water on roadways is likely. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Lucky Peak Spring Shores Marina, Lucky Peak Reservoir, Arrowrock Dam, Lucky Peak Dam and Arrowrock Reservoir. Idaho State Highway east of Boise is within the warned area. The Valley Fire Burn Scar is also within the warned area.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to their surface.

Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation similar to situations which produce snowfall.

Hole Punch Clouds Next Topic: Mammatus Clouds

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.
